If you’ve ever imported goods into the United States, you’ve likely encountered a critical player in global logistics: the customs broker. From paperwork to compliance, these licensed professionals are vital in ensuring your cargo clears U.S. Customs without delays, penalties, or costly mistakes. At Coppersmith Global Logistics, customs brokerage isn’t just a service—it’s part of our legacy.

What Does a Customs Broker Do?

A customs broker is a licensed expert authorized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to act on behalf of importers and exporters. Their role includes:

  • Preparing and submitting entry documents, including HTS classification and value declaration
  • Ensuring compliance with all regulations, including partner government agency requirements (FDA, USDA, EPA, etc.)
  • Calculating and arranging payment of duties and taxes
  • Advising on trade agreements and tariff mitigation strategies
  • Coordinating with carriers and warehouses for smooth cargo release

Think of your broker as the translator between your goods and the government—and trust us, that language isn’t always easy to speak.

When Is a Licensed Customs Broker Required?

Not every shipment requires a broker, but many do. You must use a licensed customs broker when:

  • You’re importing commercial goods valued over $2,500 (formal entry).
  • Other government agencies regulate your goods.
  • You need representation to file entries electronically in ACE (Automated Commercial Environment).
  • You’re using a power of attorney to allow another party to transact on your behalf.

For first-time or infrequent importers, the risk of going it alone isn’t worth it. With over 75 years of experience, Coppersmith knows how to navigate even the most complex entries.

How Do You Become a Licensed Customs Broker?

It’s no small feat. To become an LCB, you must:

  • Pass a rigorous CBP exam with a notoriously low pass rate.
  • Be a U.S. citizen, at least 21 years old, and not a federal employee.
  • Clear a background check and get approved by CBP.

This is a profession built on trust, knowledge, and attention to detail—which brings us to Coppersmith’s proud foundation.

From that historic start, Adrienne and her son built a business that emphasized personal service, regulatory expertise, and family values.

Today, Coppersmith spans nine U.S. offices, including Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Houston, Seattle, and Portland. We continue to honor her legacy with cutting-edge compliance systems, experienced professionals, and a commitment to customer success.
