UPDATE 7/20/23 10:00 AM
After a brief strike that was ruled illegal since the proper notice wasn’t given, the Canadian ILWU is back on the job. Both sides returned to the negotiating table after the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) stressed the need for compromise before the Canadian Parliament reconvenes and forces a return to work. Preferring a negotiated agreement before taking such drastic steps, we’re hoping this final kerfuffle is enough to eke out an end to the disruption. Coppersmith will continue to update this post with updated information as we receive it.

The deal between the British Columbia Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) and Canadian ILWU dockworkers announced last Friday was rejected by the ILWU leadership yesterday, July 18, when management wouldn’t budge on the four-year contract length. The union wants a shorter-term contract, allowing them to return to the table more frequently to renegotiate as the market changes.

Recent developments in labor negotiations have brought new challenges. The agreement was all but complete after a federal mediator stepped in on July 14th and forced parties to compromise. This rejection has little to do with the meat of the contract, focusing more on the longevity and speed with which the Canadian ILWU can push for updates in case of market changes.

As we enter the nineteenth day of these strikes, the situation remains uncertain. Ships are accumulating at the ports, causing significant delays for imports and exports. This mounting backlog is a vivid reminder of the far-reaching implications of these strikes on the global supply chain.
