IMPORTING MADE-UP ARTICLES OF CITES ANIMALS

With the recent changes in Fish and Wildlife Regulations as to what their definition of Hunting Trophy is; there has been much controversy as to whether the practice of importing articles made up from the animal you personally sport-hunted will be permitted or not.

As with most things in life there are rules which must be followed. The new rule in this case is if the hunter has made-up articles from CITES animals such as Elephant or Southern White Rhino they will need to make application for an U.S. Import Permit. *This does not apply to articles made-up of hide or hair or leather goods for commercial or non-commercial purposes from Botswana, Namibia & South Africa and leather goods for non-commercial purposes from Zimbabwe.* A specific form has been generated just for this purpose. It is a 3-200-37. This form can be completed on-screen then printed to be forwarded to the Division of Management Authority in Arlington, VA with the $100 fee. It will take more than 90 days to be processed. Hunters should request copies of the proposed Export "P" Permit from the agent overseas handling the shipment. No shipment of these items should be made until you have the U.S. permit in hand; otherwise the items will be confiscated and destroyed. Caution is urged in the timing of these permits. Once issued the U.S. Import Permit is valid for a period of one year whereas the Export Permit from overseas are only valid for a period of six months. BOTH permits must be valid at the time the shipment crosses a U.S. border.
